iOS 26.4 Lays the Groundwork for CarPlay Video, Including Apple TV

Back at WWDC 2025, Apple revealed that it was planning to allow CarPlay users to watch video via AirPlay in their cars while not driving, and the first beta of iOS 26.4 suggests that the feature may be on the way.
The original mention of this feature appeared on Apple’s CarPlay developer page within the automaker-specific section, indicating that CarPlay with AirPlay video is something automakers will eventually have to implement. Presumably, this is because it needs to be integrated with the car’s systems to ensure that the feature can only be used while the car is parked to prevent the potential for distracted driving.
The first beta of iOS 26.4 rolled out to developers today includes many new features for CarPlay video playback, including features like ride streaming, notifications, and more.
Sadly, it appears that the Apple TV will support the CarPlay video feature when it launches, as there are other references to interacting with the TV program while using CarPlay, such as a message that may appear informing users that they will need to subscribe to Apple TV on their iPhone while not driving when trying to access subscription content.
While the new code in iOS 26.4 provides evidence that Apple is getting closer to introducing this feature, there are no guarantees that it will be finally available when the update is released publicly, as Apple sometimes removes code found in early betas or continues to build on it in subsequent updates before features go live. And since automakers need to add support for it eventually, it’s unclear how quickly CarPlay video will roll out to all makes and models once the feature is introduced.
