Firefox Gets New Controls to Disable AI Features

The Firefox browser is getting options to disable AI enhancements, Mozilla said today. Firefox users who prefer to browse without artificial intelligence will be able to turn off several AI features that Mozilla has added over the past few months.
Here’s what might be disabled:
- Translation, which helps you browse the web in your preferred language.
- A separate document for PDFs, which adds accessibility descriptions to images on PDF pages.
- AI-enhanced tab grouping, which suggests related tabs by group names.
- Link preview, which shows important points before opening the link.
- AI chatbot in the sidebar, which allows you to use the chatbot of your choice as you browse, including options such as Anthropic Claude, ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, Google Gemini and Le Chat Mistral.
AI features can be disabled completely or individually, so users can pick and choose which ones they want to use. Users will be able to continue opting out of AI features as they are added to the browser, and the main Block AI Enhancements change will disable all current and future AI features, including triggers or reminders to use existing or future AI features.
Mozilla says it wants to be able to continue building AI options for those who want them, while also giving those who don’t have a way to disable them.
AI controls will be added in Firefox 148, which is scheduled to start rolling out to users on February 24.
