Apple Wins Third Jury Case Against Optis, Avoids Hundreds of Millions in Patent Damages

Apple did not infringe on any of the patents of Texas company Optis Wireless, a judge ruled today. In the decision shared by Reutersa judge ruled that Apple did not infringe on any of the five LTE patents that Optis sued back in 2019. If Optis had won, Apple could have faced hundreds of millions in damages.

Optis Wireless initially won $506 million from Apple in a 2020 jury trial, but the damages were dismissed after Apple filed an appeal because the judge did not calculate the damages by understanding the fair and reasonable patent (FRAND) terms. A second jury trial was held in 2021 to recalculate damages, and the jury awarded Optis $300 million. Apple sued again, and the appellate court vacated the $300 million judgment because the district court gave the jury wrong instructions.

Apple and Optis were returned to court for a third jury trial, leading to today’s decision. According to the judge’s finding for Apples, Apple owes Optis nothing. In a statement to ReutersApple said it was pleased the judge rejected Optis’ infringement claims.

“We thank the judges for their time, and we are pleased that they rejected Optis’ false claims. Optis does not manufacture products, and its sole business is to sue companies, which it has done repeatedly to Apple in an attempt to obtain overpayments.”

Optis is likely to appeal this decision, taking it back to the trial court again. Apple is also fighting Optis in the UK, where a UK court has ordered Apple to pay $502 million. Apple has appealed this decision and the UK High Court will hear the case in June 2026.
