New theme packs for your Pixel phone are coming soon, but don’t delay on the AI icons

The TL;DR
- Google has discontinued the Bad theme pack for Pixel devices.
- However, it says, “new theme packs are coming.”
- Google also dropped more hints about upcoming AI-based icons, which could be coming soon but will require Android 17 to run.
For years now, customization has been a major focus of Android. While Android gives you granular controls over how each feature of the phone looks, Google recently added the option to apply themes to your Pixels using a single tap. That includes changing everything from the wallpaper, lock screen, sound, clock styles, voice colors, icon themes, and more. Today, we are reading two important updates of theme packs for Pixel devices.
As part of the November Pixel Drop, Google added a new option to apply system-wide themes using theme packs. The first theme pack it released was to promote the theatrical release of Wicked: For Good, featuring Ariana Grande. Those, sadly, are leaving.

As part of this release, Google has introduced three new theme packs that users can download and apply to their Pixel devices. However, a few months after the release, Google has now pulled these themes, and they are no longer available for download. If you’ve downloaded them before, you’ll still have them.
If you missed out on downloading these themes before, you’ll be happy to know that you’ll have access to new ones soon. Although the Bad themes are no longer available, the theme park department says that new themes are coming soon. Unfortunately, there is no information on when these new themes will arrive.

In addition, we identified information on themed icons on Android. Although themed icons have been available on Android for a long time, some developers have not implemented support, so their app icons appear the same whether the feature is enabled or disabled. To address this, Google updated its Google Play Store policies last August, requiring developers to add options to change their app icons using themes. While it didn’t specifically require developers, the move was ultimately intended to ensure that all icons are compatible with your current theme.
Another solution to this problem is something we learned about last July. As previously noted, Google can allow users to create themed icons using AI. The feature isn’t live yet, but we’ve identified the following code reference that suggests it may require a specific version of Android to work:
The code
AI icons not supported on older ROM: %s (requires C* or newer).
While it’s not immediately clear what the “C” stands for here, there’s a high chance that it stands for CinnamonBun, which is the sweet codename for Android 17. If that’s true, it could indicate that the AI icons need at least Android 17 to work.
We still don’t know exactly how AI icons might work, except to speculate that they might use generative AI to create icons for apps whose icons look dull or unattractive when they’re themed. We’ll be sure to share details once we see anything.
⚠️ An APK teardown helps predict features that may come to service in the future based on code in progress. However, it is possible that such predicted characteristics may not result in social exclusion.
