This clearly provides an efficient use of space, allowing a dense face of information next to simplicity.

If we ignore the random Gold Edition model, initially Apple gave us one option for each update rather than a list of models to choose from. Later we found many other options, but these were more along the lines of special programs than regular ones. There were more reasonable Edition models, the Apple Watch SE as a budget option, and the Ultra as a niche option for outdoor travelers.

I strongly suspect that many Ultra Watch buyers choose the model not because they spend time hanging from a cliff or exploring the ocean floor, but because they want a very large screen size.

There is nothing wrong with choosing Ultra even though it will never leave the city limits. Indeed, Macworld’s Jason Snell says Apple should offer more options to meet the needs of different owners.

He notes that Apple offers a wide selection of other products. There are four different iPhones to choose from, four different iPads, two different MacBook lines with a choice of sizes within them, and four desktop Macs. He suggests that the company should offer a similar range of options for the Apple Watch.

What is stopping Apple from designing a new Apple Watch that is very different from existing models, perhaps with a round display and a different way of bands? What’s stopping Apple from designing a watchOS-based fitness tracker with a small display?

Apple doesn’t even need to think that any design is like that high on the existing Apple Watch. Sometimes, Apple’s goals are to get people to spend more money and reach potential customers who aren’t interested in the current Apple Watch. [It could] just add new devices to the Apple Watch product line and see what happens.

Read Snell’s full article at Macworld.

When I replaced my Apple Watch with a smart ring, the last time I wore one I had a simple watch face that could easily fit inside the circular display – and I actually liked the look. It is not a chance that I now wear round deaf watches.

My watch face could be a lot simpler because I realized I wasn’t using it much for information, but mostly as a health and fitness tracker and an Apple Pay device. Another person may cram so much information in that they need the large rectangular screen of the Apple Watch Ultra just to see it all. Different needs for different people and I think Snell is right that it would be great if this could be seen on a wider range of Apple Watch models.

What are your thoughts? Should Apple offer a range of different form factors? For example, a program that looks like this:

Apple Watch Series n

Apple Watch Ultra

A variant with a rounded face

A simple fitness tracker with Apple Pay

Please take our survey and share your thoughts in the comments.

Featured accessories

Photo by Rachit Tank on Unsplash

FTC: We use auto affiliate links to earn income. More.

No, I get it: round watches are a good use of space, and there’s probably a reason why the Apple Watch continues to dominate the market.
